Your Biggest Organ & The Sun – Tip Tuesday

Yay! It’s Tuesday, which means I’m handing out tips! (HA) A little late in the day, but that’s okay. Today’s Tip Tuesday is about protecting your biggest organ (your skin), from what makes life go around (the sun)!

My point being, sunscreen is a MUST. The SINGLE biggest thing you can do to keep your face looking young and healthy is to cover up every day with a natural sunscreen.

I’m pretty sure we all know why it’s important to use sunscreen, but I’m going to go ahead and reiterate a few points. Not using sunscreen can cause serious issues, such as skin cancer (melanoma ☹), pre-mature aging, painful sunburn, redness and irritation, sun/age spots, and freckles.

So, you’re constantly hearing dermatologists and estheticians (ME 🙂 ) talk about SPF, but what does that really mean? SPF stands for sun protection factor, which is a measure of how well the sunscreen protects against UVB rays (short-range rays, the major contributor to sunburn, and causes more damage to the superficial epidermal layers). Side note: UVA rays (less intense than UVB, but penetrates the skin more deeply) are actually not rated by SPF.

The Mayo Clinic reports that you really do not need more than a 30 SPF, broad-spectrum sunscreen for anyone over the age of six months old, and that any higher than 30 SPF really isn’t going to offer enough protection from those beautiful rays of golden sunshine, to make up for the difference in price for that 60-100 SPF. The golden ticket to getting the most protection, is applying it plentifully and often. The fact is, the majority of us are not using enough sunscreen. The Mayo Clinic says, “About two tablespoons of sunscreen, or about enough to fit in a shot glass, should only be enough for your face, your neck and the back of your hands.” Reapplying throughout the day, every two hours or so, and more often if you’re sweating or swimming.

Don’t forget, even if the sun isn’t shining, you NEED to continually wear sunscreen. UVA/UVB rays can penetrate through the clouds! Apply sunscreen before you go outside, ALWAYS. Keep in mind, it can take up to 15 minutes for your skin to absorb. REALLY! Use it EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. Your 40s and 50s will thank you for it. ❤ Take to heart applying sunscreen to the backs of your hands and neck, those are the two most unforgiving aging places on a woman’s body (YAY FOR US!). ☹
